WISER International’s mission is to work with girls to transcend poverty, HIV/AIDS, and gender-based violence by creating environments that produce exceptional young women who drive change in their communities.
It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in North Carolina and is the major fundraising and strategic partner for the Kenya-based WISER NGO.
WISER Board Chair Melissa Katz is the Owner & Principal of Stony Hill Communications, LLC and has more than 25 years of healthcare public relations experience. She began working with WISER in 2012 and has traveled to Muhuru Bay four times. Twice, her husband, Michael Freidberg has joined her and in 2019, her daughter, Annie, made the trip for the first time. In addition to their daughter, Melissa and Michael have three sons.
Dr. Sherryl Broverman*
Sherryl is the Founder and Chair Emeritus of WISER International. Sherryl is also a professor at Duke University in the Biology Department and the Duke Global Health Institute, where her scholarship involves the links between gender inequality, education and HIV risk, and democratizing access to science education. Sherryl is a Senior Fellow in an international community of transformation to improve STEM education and civic engagement via the NSF-supported National Center for Science and Civic Engagement. Sherryl’s commitment to science education and civic engagement has been recognized with the David and Janet von Brooks Award for Distinguished Teaching in the Sciences; the Dean’s Award for Diversity; the William E. Bennett Award for Extraordinary Contributions to Civic Engagement from the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement; and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for excellence of character and service to humanity.
Carrie has led product innovation, research and development, regulatory compliance, and manufacturing operations on twenty products during her 25+-year career in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and North America. She holds a Master of Science in medical microbiology from the University of Minnesota, a Bachelor of Science in natural science from University of Wisconsin-Madison, in addition to PMP and Green Belt certifications.
Joseph is currently the President and COO of Familywize Community Service Partnership, an organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities by making prescription medication more affordable and more accessible for all. Prior to his involvement with Familywize, he spent more than 28 years with several Fortune 500 organizations including over 20 years with Express Scripts.
Michael is an experienced leader of with a particular interest and capacity in organizational growth and strategic implementation. Michael has served in leadership roles for Deloitte Consulting, United Way, GBCHealth, Concern Worldwide, and RFKennedy Human Rights. Michael has a BA in Economics & International Relations from Stanford University and an MBA from Duke University.
Steve is a business development executive with extensive experience in the start-up and leadership of innovation in the Health and Mobile/Digital sectors. He is currently consulting with a high profile organization to identify and scale solutions to global health issues. Steve is also the Co-Founder of Robertos Kids and serves as a board member with EveryoneOn and SEEDS Together.
Kristin Ashcraft is the VP of Alliance Management and a member of the Executive Leadership team at MyHealthTeams, a venture-backed digital health start-up. Kristin brings expertise in strategic planning and direction, scalable growth, and developing organizational culture to the WISER International team. She holds an MBA from UCLA and a BA in Biology and Environmental Science and Policy from Duke University.
Prashant is a Director at LibreMax Capital, where he specializes in commercial real estate debt investments and has worked for over 8 years. Prior to that, he worked in Investment Banking at Barclays Capital on the Healthcare Leveraged Finance team. Prashant has a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, along with a minor in Economics and certificate in Global Health. While at Duke, Prashant spent time working in Kenya and visited Muhuru Bay during the implementation of WISER’s first-ever programs.
